The Saab 900 Convertible:
The “Classic” 900 was originally launched in 1979 and initially available as 3/4 door sedan and 3/5 door hatchback. By the early 80’s, Bob Sinclair (head of Saab-Scania USA at the time) came up with the idea to launch a convertible variant of the 900 platform to give the brand more presence in the US market. Saab HQ in Sweden was skeptical at first, but Sinclair’s idea proved right - the 900 Convertible debuted in 1986 and became a major success in the US. After the first batch of 400 production cars for the US sold out almost instantly, Saab ramped up production from 1987 onwards and from then onwards offered the 900 Convertible nearly worldwide.
The convertible was a considerably more expensive car than its model-range siblings and was available in a few iterations. Mainly based on the same 1985cc in-line DOHC four cylinder, multi-point fuel injection and in most cases – a Turbo (although N/A 2- and 2.1 litre variants were available in select markets as well). Badging varied between markets betwee 900i, 900S, 900 EP, 900S Turbo, 16S, etc. We think the European 900S's with the low or high pressure turbo are the ones to go for.
Uncompromised seating for four, world class build quality, comfortable yet sporty – the 900 convertible was an exceptionally well-engineered proposition and up there with Mercedes-Benz in terms of overall build quality. It is easy to see why these have gotten so popular (when new, as well as today) amongst enthusiasts. As ever, original, unmolested examples are a rare sight these days as Saabs are known to eat hundreds of thousands of km’s without any issues. Low mileage examples are therefore very sought-after and increasingly rare. We look out for examples that tick those boxes only and we're thrilled to have this exact specimen available for you!
This 900S Convertible:
This 900S is an original Dutch car from new, a 2.0 LPT with 141 hp and specified with the manual 5-speed gearbox. This car was bought new on the 14th of May 1993 by its first owner at official Saab dealer RAC Motors of Rotterdam. The lady who ordered it new (a proper Saab afficionado) went through several Saabs before purchasing this one and even exchanged a 900i Convertible to purchase this car in 1993 (these details are official notes in the service manual). In 2001, the first and only owner moved to Belgium where the Saab would be registered on Belgian plates for about 15 years. Come 2019, she returned to "home soil" in Rotterdam, back to the original registration of GN-JS-80. Thus although this is unmistakably an original Dutch car from new - the license check (Finnik/RDW etc) will indicate this being an "imported" car.
The first owner certainly had great taste - chosing the superb colour of Scarabee Green Metallic (code 230) over a Beige full leather interior and black softtop. The car was originally registered GN-JS-80, the same registration it still bears today. After 32 years of cherished ownership by its first and only owner, age got in the way of frequent use which brought her to the difficult decision to let go of her 900S in August 2025 when we purchased the car and brought it to Maastricht.
Today the 900S presents near-immaculately and most importantly in original unmolested form. It is still bearing its first paint throughout with the exception of the raer bootlid (paint depth images on file) as well as its original softtop. A clear testament of a carefully looked-after car that has always been garaged. It goes without saying this example is totally accident-free and looks just as bright as the day it left the factory, albeit with the usual, acceptable signs of use ofcourse.
The interior is neat as well, beautifully upholstered in the original Beige full leather, free of any significant scuffs or tears and a dashboard covered with burr wallnut veneer that almost seems unharmed by any UV light! The carpets and mats are also original. Besides the the usual signs of its 32 year age - the interior is a lovely place to be with all the creature comforts one needs to actually use a car like this today- including ice cold A/C! The original Sony radio is still present as well (together with all its Sony documentation) and works perfectly in conjunction with the electrically retractable antenna. All electric ancillaries are perfectly functioning without exception - as is the roof mechanism.
The Saab is fully complete with all original accessories and documents: jack, spare wheel, toolkit, user manual, service booklet, accessory booklet, leather pouch and a dedicated history file containing period documents, invoices and more. The mileage is substantiated by the service booklet as well as accompanying documents. Two complete sets of keys are present as well, plus the Beige plastic covers and storage bag to cover the roof neatly once put down.
She will be freshly serviced and gone-through in first two weeks of September, so she is ready to hit the road with its next caretaker. The Michelin tires currently fitted, also have plenty of life left in them so are in no need of changing anytime soon. Items addressed during service in September 2025:
  • Exhaust re-mounting and overhaul

  • A/C refill and check-over

  • oil + filter

  • Air filter

  • Brake fluid flush & change

  • New thermostat + coolant flush
