The Z3 2.8:Contrary to most market launches, BMW chose to offer the Z3 with smaller engines at launch and kept the tasty engines for later in the production cycle. This meant that the Z3 Roadster was initially offered with mere 1.8 and 1.9 litre 4-cylinder engines, but from the get-go BMW had envisioned to unleash the full potential of the Z3 platform by also offering sweet 6-cylinders, which are the ones to have, ofcourse! The 6-cylinders became available from 1996 onwards and came in the form of the 2.8 and the Z3M with a 3.2L engine respectively. The 2.8 straight-six was coded M52 (S50 & S52 in the M cars), and BMW aficionados immediately know that the M52 is one of the best straigth six engines ever produced by BMW. The M52 benefitted from a host of technological marvels and refinements underwhich a lightweight aluminium engine block, DOHC as well as a single VANOS system (variable valve control). 193 hp and 280 Nm of torque was the result in the 2.8 and a redline of 6.500 rpm make this specific engine the definitive variant to have for a Z3 Roadster. Bare in mind, Z3's only come in at just over 1.300 kg!The 2.8's were fitted from factory with the so-called "wide-body" bodywork, giving the Z3 a notoriously more muscular stance with considerably wider arches on both front and rear. Even a powerbulge on the bonnet was incorporated into the near timeless design. A 2.8 Z3 was always intended to be a driver's car and is therefore best suited with a manual gearbox, specifically the wonderful ZF S5-31 5-speed, exactly the same gearbox that was utilised in the Z3M's. Z3 2.8's present a very interesting proposition in today's market. An open-top, naturally aspirated six cylinder, manual gearbox and timeless design with plenty of creature comforts to allow for near daily use. BMW don't make them like this anymore, and nor does any other brand for that matter! Z3M's have long taken off in terms of prices, but great 2.8's like the one we're pleased to have sourced here present superb value for money. Get in while you still can! This Z3 2.8:The car on offer here, chassis no. LD44183, was originally produced on the 8th of July 1997 and first registered on the 19th of August that year. It is noteworthy to state the Z3 has been serviced according to its annual service plan by the supplying dealer for its entire life, something you rarely see these days. The engine and VANOS system are buttersmooth and pull very strongly - it is an absolute event to drive! The ZF 5-speed shifts wonderfully and the clutch has plenty of bite too, this Z3 needs for nothing really. The Michelin tires are near new as well. This Z3 is totally ready for a new owner to enjoy her as intended in the forthcoming driving season! A nice feature is that this exact car was part of the June 2022 edition of the famous German magazine: Classiccars. We can't think of a more fitting testament to its originality and overall quality than that really... Bite-size: There's Z3's and there's this. If a 2.8L Z3 is on your list, this has to be the car.
