The MG RV8:
For decades, MG has been synonymous with building quintessential British sportscars like the MGA in the 1960’s but most notably its successor; the MGB. The latter has been an immense success, not only in sales but also in establishing MG as the go-to brand for sporty, well put together motorcars of British descent. By the late 1980’s, the Mazda MX5 bursted onto the scene and showed that affordable sportscars had a lot of potential in the market. Naturally, Rover took note of this success and wanted a piece of the pie as well. Rover set-out to give the underpinnings of the hugely successful MGB one last hurrah by updating and upgrading it in all directions; the RV8 was born. The engine of choice was the trusty 3950 cc all-aluminum Rover V8 sending a respectable 190 hp to the rear wheels through to a five-speed manual gearbox.
It is clear that the MG was aimed at a more sophisticated public than the Mazda MX5 for instance, which also shows in the standard equipment it was suited with – almost no options could be selected as everything was standard from factory. MG did go to town in dressing the interior as well as they could, with fine quality Connolly leather for the upholstery and Elm Burr wood for the fascia. The dashboard too is a classic British endeavour; a plethora of driver-focussed controls and instruments, nothing superfluous, a very pleasant and comfortable place to be in for the longer journeys too. The RV8 was naturally aimed at a clientele that wanted something different, more quirky if you like.
Less than 2000 RV8’s ever left the factory, all in RHD configuration with the majority going to Japan and the domestic UK market – making it a very rare beast on the roads these days. Genuinely great examples with low (warranted) mileages are an ever scarcer sight, which makes us delighted to be offering this great example for sale.
This MG RV8:
The car on offer here chassis no. 0368 is believed to being the 117th RV8 built and was first registered on the 1st of January 1994 to A. Norman Jenkins of Ramsgate, South East England. The specification of the car was Solid Black over a Stone Beige full leather interior by Connolly – exactly as it is presented today.
By 1999, with a recorded mileage of approximately 5000 miles sir P. J. Kenyon of Hatfield took custodianship over the car. He would evidently drive the RV8 very sparingly as period MOT reports indicate about 7000 miles on the odometer by 2002, when the RV8 would be acquired by its final owner who would import it to the Netherlands via renowned MG experts Brown & Gammons LTD. The Dutch owner would go on to cherish the RV8 for almost 2 decades and would ramp up the mileage to just under 35.800 today (that’s less than 1500 a year).
Today the RV8 presents itself in utter-original condition with its original brightwork, lights, lenses and glass, all being factory features as is the (unscuffed!) upholstery, carpets, dashboard and soft-top. Naturally, beneath the sinister Black exterior resides the original, engine and gearbox. The car has clearly been cared for as it drives beautifully with that Rover V8 pulling a treat with the shedloads of torque it has to offer from very low down in the rev range and the gearbox shifting as precise as it would have done in 1994 – all very neat.
The proverbial cherry on the cake with this mint RV8 is the fact that all original accessories, equipment and literature are still present. Original and complete tool roll, spare wheel, jack, hood cover with storage bag and frame as well as 2 sets of original keys. The documentation is elaborative too; original owner’s handbook, service record, original RV8 brochure as well as some period MOT, insurance and registration records. Thanks to the vastness of documentation, we can warrant the 35.800 miles to be original – something rarely seen on cars of this age. A very well kept example indeed.
Bite-size:
For someone who has been waiting for the right RV8 to cross his path, or somebody who just wants an eminently usable sportscar for the upcoming Spring and Summer we cannot recommend this lovely RV8 highly enough.
