The 105 Series Alfa Romeo Spider:As the 1960s hit full stride, Alfa Romeo found itself in what aficionados now regard as a golden age. The marque’s 105 series - introduced through the elegant two-door Bertone GT coupé and the four-door Giulia - was winning hearts left, right and center. True to form, Alfa also kept an open two-seater in its stable and by the mid-decade, the charming but aging 101-series Giulia Spider was due for replacement.Enter the 105-series Spider: a fresh design mechanically rooted in the Giulia saloon rather than the GT coupé, as is often misreported. Styled by Pininfarina, the first series emerged with a delicate, rounded “Osso di Seppia” tail - earning it the now-iconic Duetto name. It was a pure, almost poetic expression of Italian open-top motoring. For the second series from 1970 onwards, Alfa evolved the concept into a more resolved package. The rear end was reshaped into a purposeful “Coda Tronca” or Kamm-tail - part aesthetic decision, part aerodynamic science. Under the bonnet, a range of willing twin-cam four-cylinder engines were offered: from the playful 1300 and 1600 units to the more muscular 1750cc, briefly available near the series’ end.But the king of the hill was the 2000 Spider Veloce, with Alfa using the Veloce (meaning "fast") for the 1750 and 2000 engines. With a newly introduced 1962cc engine delivering a lively 129bhp and 180Nm of torque, it gave the light, just-over-1000kg chassis the sort of verve that made spirited Sunday drives feel like Mille Miglia warmups. Elegant, engaging, and unmistakably Alfa, the Spider Veloce remains one of the marque’s most enduring open-air expressions. At Garage Maestricht, we think the second series is the one to have in today's market. In a way, the series 2 captures the essence of the 1st series but at a considerable cost saving. Great, unmolested examples are difficult to find and the market spread in terms of quality and price is vast. The one we have sourced here is at the higher echelons of that spread! This 2000 Spider Veloce:Delivered new to Germany on the 31st of August 1981 via Autovertrieb Kaiserslautern GmbH, this late-production second series Spider Veloce remains in beautifully preserved condition. Finished in rare Biancospino AR013 (not often seen of Spiders) over a beautifully patinated Bordeaux leatherette upholstery, it retains its matching-numbers engine and 5-speed gearbox. The car’s 93.250 km's are fully documented via TÜV reports, invoices and correspondence dating back to the early 1980s. Its originality is evident in the details - factory weldspots, pressings and panel gapping, and the rust-free undercarriage is simply exceptional. The carpets have been renewed to a high standard somtime in the past, while the seat upholstery appears original and beautifully patinated.Mechanically, it performs as impressively as it presents. The engine fires instantly thanks to a proper carburettor setup (this one has a pair of Solex carbs) and 1-2-3 electronic ignition, the gearbox shifts just as smoothly and recent work includes rebuilt brakes and some suspension components. The original Philips DC864 radio (with manual) is included, though a tasteful Pininfarina blanking plate is currently fitted. The Spider currently sits on a nearly new set of 6J x 14" Cromodora CD 855 wheels, but the original 14" steel wheels are present as well.Offered with a superb history file, all original keys, manuals, spare wheel, tonneau cover and jack this is a rare chance to acquire a genuinely original and well-documented example of Alfa’s enduring open-top icon. Currently supplied with exported German registration, we can deliver the car on Dutch plates including a fresh MOT (APK) included in the asking price.
