The Beetle Convertible:
Volkswagen went to great lengths with regards to engineering their convertible version of the fabled Beetle, which was built by coachbuilder Karmann in Osnabrück from 1949 onwards. Rather than just adding a folding top, VW opted to stiffen the chassis considerably by adding structural rigidity on various places. Moreover had the soft-top a full inner headliner to hide the folding mechanisms and the rear window was tempered glass. Once put down, the softtop could be nicely covered by a colour matching tonneau cover. A nice insight into the sheer (German) engineering that went into these, VW noticed the rear view mirror was totally obscured once the top was down and solved it by adding an adjustable arm with offset pivot – how German!
Only 1 in about 50 Beetles produced was a convertible, making these considerably more rare than the coupes. In total over 300k convertibles left the factory gates with countless (stylistic and technical) changes made over its 3 decade lifespan on par with its coupe sibling until production seized in 1980. Original (unmolested) European-spec cars are the ones to have, like the one we’re offering here.
This Beetle Convertible:
Chassis 1562078553 was first registered on the 7th of April 1976 as a TYP 15/D 11, 1303 convertible. Finished in sinister and svelte Schwarz L 041 with a Beige softtop and off-white interior – strongly believed to being the original spec. We’ve sourced the car in the vicinity of Rome, Italy in mid-2022  and subsequently transported it to Maastricht. We strongly believe this specimen has remained in Italy throughout its life, substantiating its very solid bodywork.
This specimen is a proper “what you see is what you get” and genuinely good driver’s car. A very straight and solid body (from above and beneath!) with original floors still in place. Technically fully functioning, with a good pulling engine and slick shifting gearbox. Brakes, steering and clutch perform as they should without exception. The paintwork presents quite nicely and has been resprayed sometime in the past. True and honest in all aspects, but by no means a concours restoration as some signs of use over the last 50 years are evident on certain places. Things like a few imperfections in the paintwork, which are indicated on the images showing this car has been driven and used but nothing insurmountable. The indicated mileage of 97k km's is believed to be original as well.
We’ve had the softtop renewed (the old one had some scars which were letting the car down just too much in our opinion) and complements the near perfect interior very nicely. The brightwork presents consistent throughout, with some areas showing their originality with 50 years of life. With this being a post ’75 Beetle, the indicator lights have been neatly incorporated into the front bumpers. A nice touch which only the European-spec cars benefit from.
The car is suited with an ASI certificate, original jack and matching tonneau cover.
Bite-size:
